Morocco charts ambitious port expansion

2

Morocco is set to strengthen its maritime infrastructure with two major deepwater ports, boosting trade and industrial capacity. The Nador West Med port on the Mediterranean coast will open in late 2026, offering 800 hectares for industry—expandable to 5,000 hectares—and hosting Morocco’s first liquefied natural gas terminal to support a transition from coal to cleaner energy. Further south, the Dakhla port in Western Sahara, scheduled to open in 2028, will become Morocco’s deepest port at 23 meters, with 1,600 hectares for industry and 5,200 hectares of irrigated farmland, positioning it as a gateway for landlocked Sahel nations. These projects complement existing hubs like Tanger Med and Jorf Lasfar, highlighting Morocco’s ambitions to become a regional trade and industrial powerhouse.
