Streaming is reshaping Africa’s film industry, creating unprecedented opportunities for local storytellers. South African filmmaker Rethabile Ramaphakela, whose feature Seriously Single became a Netflix Original during the pandemic, exemplifies this phenomenon, showcasing how global platforms are unlocking funding, exposure, and international audiences. Streaming platforms, including Showmax, are investing heavily in local content, providing a major boost for the African film and television industry. Africa might enjoy even more investment; however, the continent suffers from connectivity issues, with internet access remaining at 37% in sub-Saharan Africa. This could soon change, though, as mobile-first access, rising smartphone adoption, and initiatives like Google’s $1 billion African internet investment continue to expand streaming viewership. While challenges such as piracy, limited infrastructure, and funding gaps remain, emerging initiatives are fostering talent and developing infrastructure, signaling a bright future for Africa’s cinematic creativity.
