With just days to go before a steep 30% US tariff takes effect, South Africa is still pushing for a trade agreement to protect its exports. The tariff, set to begin on Friday, threatens to disrupt a key economic relationship between the two countries. Furthermore, tensions have risen recently over South Africa’s domestic race policies and its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Despite the looming deadline, Pretoria has remained quiet about the ongoing negotiations with Washington. According to the trade ministry, the country is still awaiting “substantive feedback” from the US on the proposed framework, leaving the outcome uncertain and South African businesses on edge.
