Climate Change Endangers Burkina Faso’s Kassena Houses

9

In southern Burkina Faso, the Royal Court of Tiébélé—a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its intricately painted Kassena houses—is under growing threat from climate change and conflict. Once a vibrant tourist destination, the site now faces unpredictable rains, eroding walls, and dwindling traditional materials needed for construction. Residents lament that straw is scarce, soils are weakened by chemicals, and rainfall patterns no longer follow seasonal norms, making restoration nearly impossible. Meanwhile, modern construction replaces cultural artistry with cement and metal. The decline of Tiébélé has coincided with rising insecurity, further driving away visitors. Despite global recognition, locals warn that without urgent support, this cultural treasure—rich with symbolism, craftsmanship, and history—may vanish within a generation.
