Rwanda Considers Rewilding Nyungwe Park with Elephants After 20-Year Absence

4

Rwanda is considering the return of African forest elephants to Nyungwe National Park, over two decades after poaching drove them out. Kigali has ordered a feasibility study to assess the ecological and economic viability of reintroduction. Authorities will weigh factors like habitat readiness, tourism potential, and the risk of human-wildlife conflict to determine whether the rewilding is feasible. Park officials believe the elephants could help restore ecological balance by curbing invasive vine grass that has spread in their absence. Meanwhile, conservationists are also urging broader efforts, such as bringing back buffalo and exploring the relocation of mountain gorillas. If successful, the move could mark a major step in Rwanda’s growing reputation as a leader in wildlife conservation and ecological restoration.
