As US travel restrictions tighten, Ghana is enhancing its passport’s global mobility through visa-free access across the Global South. The West African nation recently signed visa waiver agreements with Colombia, Mozambique, Dominica, and São Tomé and Príncipe, building upon a previous agreement with Morocco. Foreign Minister Sam Ablakwa stated that the goal is to make the Ghanaian passport one of the world’s most respected, revealing that more visa waiver agreements are being negotiated. This shift follows new US visa limits on Ghanaian citizens, including three-month single-entry rules for tourists, entrepreneurs, and academics, as well as rumors of a wide-ranging travel ban. With over $4.6 billion in annual remittances from the US at stake, Ghana is pivoting toward more open travel within the Global South, mirroring recent moves by Kenya, Rwanda, and Benin.
