Cameroon’s political tension has deepened after opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the release of protesters detained following the presidential poll. In a fiery social media address, Tchiroma accused the government of “state gangsterism” and “ethnic purges.” He declared himself the rightful winner of the election despite official results giving Biya 53.66% of the vote to his 35.19%. Tchiroma, reportedly in Nigeria, has urged nationwide “ghost town” protests over alleged electoral fraud. This move comes amid significant controversy, with reports from UN sources indicating a severe crackdown by security forces that resulted in 48 deaths, though officials claim only five people were killed. While the newly inaugurated President Paul Biya has called for an end to violence, Tchiroma’s warning underscores his refusal to back down.
