Innovative Finance Key to Preventing African Health Crisis

4

African health experts have stressed the need for innovative financing solutions to prevent the collapse of healthcare systems across the continent amid declining Western donor funding. For instance, the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw USAID funding has left a $12 billion shortfall in Africa, endangering critical services like maternal health, HIV treatment, and disease control. Experts advocate sustainable, innovative financing solutions – including domestic financing, health taxes, and public-private investments – to fill the gap. Notable examples of this model include Rwanda’s health insurance program and South Africa’s “sin taxes.” Other initiatives such as GAVI’s African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator, which provides funding to support local vaccine production, and Zipline, which uses drones for medical deliveries, are further transforming healthcare access across the continent.
