The US government has awarded $150 million to California-based drone logistics company Zipline to accelerate its expansion across Africa. Since launching in Rwanda in 2016, Zipline has revolutionized medical supply delivery, using drones to transport blood, vaccines, and essential healthcare products. The company has since extended operations to Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. The funding is contingent on African governments signing expansion agreements and committing to ongoing operational costs, ensuring sustainable deployment. With this investment, Zipline aims to serve more than 130 million Africans and triple the number of health facilities it reaches to 15,000. The expansion underscores the growing role of drone technology in improving healthcare accessibility across the continent.
