AES unveils new identity system

6

Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré became the first Alliance of Sahel States (AES) leader to receive the bloc’s new biometric identity card, marking a major step in defining the AES’s identity in the post-ECOWAS era. The card, unveiled by Security Minister Mahamoudou Sana, will be rolled out across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger as the region pursues unified citizenship and stronger institutional autonomy. Designed with advanced biometric features, the 10-year card strengthens security, streamlines access to services, and aligns with international standards. Its introduction follows the AES biometric passport launched earlier this year, further reinforcing the bloc’s sovereignty. With a five-year transition period, the new system sets the foundation for deeper regional integration and future cross-border cooperation.
