Kenyan recruits in Russia’s war spark outcry

7

Families in Kenya are desperately urging their government to repatriate young men recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine. Officials estimate that around 200 Kenyans are among the more than 1,400 Africans reportedly serving in Russian ranks, with some believed to be former Kenyan soldiers. Motivated by high unemployment at home, many young Kenyans were lured by promises of lucrative payments and steady work. The issue gained wider attention after a South African lawmaker resigned over allegations she misled men into joining the conflict. While some officials acknowledge active recruitment networks in Kenya, the path home from Russia remains unclear, leaving families in a painful limbo. This complex issue forces a difficult examination of economic desperation, voluntary contracts, and international responsibility.
