Mozambique plans to audit TotalEnergies’ $4.5 billion claim for losses tied to the nearly five-year pause of its massive LNG project, halted following a 2021 jihadist attack in which more than 800 people were killed. Officials say the $20 billion venture will restart, but only after a full review of force majeure costs and updated development plans. TotalEnergies is also seeking a 10-year concession extension and aims to resume production by 2029, though approval remains uncertain. The dispute comes as the company faces a legal complaint in France accusing it of complicity in war crimes linked to alleged abuses by troops guarding the project. The LNG venture remains one of Mozambique’s most significant—and contentious—investments.
