President Donald Trump has announced that he will turn his attention toward resolving Sudan’s brutal civil war after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged him to intervene during a high-profile visit to Washington. Trump admitted the conflict, which erupted in 2023 and has killed more than 40,000 people, “wasn’t on my charts” until their discussion, but pledged to begin working toward peace. In response to Trump’s declaration, Sudan’s sovereign council, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, signaled readiness to cooperate with both the US and Saudi Arabia. The renewed push comes as Saudi officials warn that continued instability threatens the Red Sea region and could create space for extremist groups.
