Burkina Faso Military Claims to Have Thwarted Major Coup Plot

Burkina Faso’s military government has announced that it foiled a major coup attempt to overthrow junta leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré. The plot, allegedly involving current and former soldiers in collaboration with terrorist leaders, sought to attack the presidential palace and destabilize the country. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana also claimed that the masterminds of the coup plot were based in neighboring Ivory Coast. The attempted coup was timed to coincide with an attack on the presidency, using religious and traditional leaders to sway military support. This marks the latest in a series of alleged attempts to remove Traoré, whose regime is grappling with militant insurgencies in the Sahel region.
