EU Recalls Ambassador Amid Aid Dispute with Niger’s Military Junta

EU Recalls Ambassador

The European Union has recalled its ambassador to Niger following tensions with the ruling military junta over the delivery of humanitarian aid for flood victims. The decision, announced on November 23, 2024, comes after the junta raised concerns about €1.3 million in EU aid given to local NGOs without prior notification to Nigerien authorities. The junta then ordered an audit to review the fund’s management. In response, the EU expressed its disagreement with Niger’s allegations as well as the justifications provided. It also condemned Niger’s junta for politicizing humanitarian aid. The organization then recalled its ambassador from the West African country for consultations at the EU headquarters in Brussels. The Nigerien junta has ruled the West African nation since seizing power in a 2023 coup.
