Kenya is making impressive strides toward universal electricity access – it’s on track to achieve 100% coverage by 2030. According to the IEA’s new Energy Policy Review, electricity access in the East African country has risen from 37% in 2013 to 79% in 2023, with rural electrification playing a key role. The country’s energy mix is dominated by low-emission sources like geothermal, wind, hydro, and solar. In fact, Kenya is a leader in off-grid solar adoption and accounts for three-quarters of all solar home system sales in East Africa in 2023. Despite progress, challenges remain, particularly in clean cooking, where millions still rely on polluting fuels. The government’s National Energy Policy Review and the Kenya National Cooking Transition Strategy aim to address these gaps, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive energy future.
