Can green design cool Cameroon’s capital city?

7

Yaoundé is facing a boiling point as rapid urbanization replaces its green hills with concrete and asphalt. A recent study forecasts the city could reach scorching highs of 38°C by 2030, exacerbating a dangerous urban heat island effect that disproportionately impacts its low-income residents. According to the study, the intense heat is triggering health issues, reducing crop yields, and deepening social inequality. However, researchers propose a compelling suite of green solutions to cool the city down. These strategies include mandating new parks and reflective buildings, retrofitting existing structures, and promoting rammed-earth homes in informal settlements. Experts argue that, without urgent action, Yaoundé’s daily life and urban environment could be overshadowed by unbearable heat.
