US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s support for Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara. In a message to King Mohammed VI, Trump endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only viable solution, marking his first public comments on the issue since returning to office. This stance continues the controversial policy established during his first term, when recognition of Moroccan claims was granted in exchange for normalized Israel-Morocco relations under the Abraham Accords. The decades-old conflict sees Morocco facing off against the Polisario Front, which seeks independence with Algeria’s backing. While the US, France, and now Britain support Morocco’s autonomy proposal, Algeria continues pushing for Western Sahara to hold a referendum.
