One-Term Warning? Gen Z Uprising Tests Ruto’s Hold on Power

4

Kenya’s President William Ruto is facing a wave of Gen Z-led protests that could define his political future. Demonstrators have taken to the streets of Kenya in protest of high living costs, police brutality, and broken promises. Their rallying cry of “Ruto wantam,” a phrase meaning Ruto one-term, demonstrates their antagonism towards the president. Despite winning on a pro-poor, anti-violence platform, Ruto’s slow response to public discontent and use of force have deepened anger among Kenyan citizens, especially after 31 people were killed during recent protests. With investor confidence shaken and the 2027 elections looming, analysts warn Ruto must change course if he intends to pacify the protesters. According to them, dialogue, not force, will be critical if he hopes to avoid becoming a one-term president.
