MTN Bets Big on Local Cloud with Launch of Data Center

3

MTN Nigeria has officially entered the cloud infrastructure race with the launch of Phase 1 of its Dabengwa Sifiso Data Center. The $100 million facility—named after a former MTN Group CEO—boasts 780 racks, 4.5 MW IT load, and Tier III standards. Phase 2, projected to cost $135 million, will target Tier IV certification and upgrade the center’s capacity to 9 MW. Positioned to localize Nigeria’s $350 million offshore cloud spend, the Dabengwa Sifiso Data Center offers in-country hosting, Infrastructure as a Service priced in naira, and compliance with local regulations. The cloud platform supports self-orchestration, likely the first by a local cloud provider, empowering developers to build faster. The center will also be open to other fiber providers, helping MTN avoid vendor lock-in challenges.
