From Wagner to Africa Corps: Moscow’s New Playbook in West Africa

8

Russia is doubling down on its presence in Africa, aiming to deepen both economic and military ties as Western influence wanes across the region. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Moscow plans to expand its reach, especially in West Africa, where recent coups have created a strategic opening for foreign influence. This development has led to concerns in the West, particularly in France, which has been expelled in some countries in favor of a partnership with Russia. Meanwhile, Moscow appears to be shifting strategies, with recent reports indicating the departure of Wagner forces from Mali, where they had been supporting that country’s military government in its fight against armed groups. In their place will be Africa Corps, which will provide training instead of directly engaging in the fighting.
