Kenya has deployed 230 additional police officers to Haiti, marking the first reinforcement of the multinational security mission since the UN expanded its mandate in September. Their arrival brings the force to 980 personnel—still far below the 5,500 authorized—to combat powerful gangs that now control most of Port-au-Prince and have plunged the nation into a severe humanitarian crisis. Kenya, which leads the mission, has contributed the most troops. However, contributions from other countries remain limited. Funding has also stalled, with the UN trust fund receiving no new donations since August. The US, while providing over $1 billion in logistical support, has reduced direct financial backing, leaving the mission far short of its annual $800 million target as Haiti’s crisis deepens.
