Why Benin’s coup attempt failed

3

A recent coup attempt in Benin was swiftly thwarted by a coordinated regional military response, highlighting shifting dynamics in West Africa. Unlike successful takeovers in the Sahel, this bid failed when Nigeria and ECOWAS forces intervened at the government’s request, causing the plot to collapse. Analysts point to three key factors that likely motivated the plotters. First is the growing autocracy in the country under President Patrice Talon, which has eroded political freedoms. Second is the severe spillover of jihadist violence from northern neighbors into Benin, straining security forces. Finally, the attempt reflects a dangerous “coup contagion” spreading from the Sahel. Benin, previously a democratic outlier, has seen democratic constraints weaken since Talon’s election in 2016, fueling discontent and fostering an environment for the would-be coupists.
