Ethiopia strikes deal with Amhara faction

9

Ethiopia has taken a significant step toward easing tensions in its troubled Amhara region with a new peace deal between the regional government and one faction of the Fano militia. Brokered by the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the agreement offers hope after two years of conflict. However, experts warn its impact may be limited without addressing deeper political grievances. The signatories frame the pact as a turning point, yet the fragmented nature of the Fano movement and questions over representation cast doubt over its reach. Even so, analysts see it as an important opening—one that could inspire broader dialogue if backed by genuine political will.
