In 2024, nearly 1.6 million F-1 and M-1 students chose to study in the U.S.—a 5% increase from 2023 and a strong signal of global student confidence post-pandemic. More students are using U.S. education as a launchpad for careers in fast-growing fields like AI, engineering, and data analytics.

One of the biggest highlights: STEM OPT participation hit a record high, with over 165,000 international students authorized to work in the U.S.—a 36% year-over-year increase.

Nigerian students are increasingly part of this shift. With a strong presence in science and engineering programs, Nigerian students are aligning their education choices with in-demand career pathways and long-term job market success.

Key Insights:

  • Nigeria is a top contributor from Africa to the U.S. international student population.
  • Growing interest in STEM majors, including computer science, data science, and engineering.
  • U.S. education offers Nigerian students access to real-world industry experience through STEM OPT.
  • Steady year-over-year growth in student enrolment and post-study career pathways.
  • Reflects broader African student demand for global education with a clear return on investment.

STEM-related majors dominated international student interest in 2024.

  • Computer science led the way with over 118,000 active students, up 9% year-over-year.
  • Computer and information sciences (general) followed closely with 82,000 students, a 5% increase.
  • Notably, business analytics rose seven spots to become the 16th most popular major, growing 48% year-over-year, as students increasingly seek programs that blend quantitative and business-focused skills—highly valued in fields like fintech, e-commerce, and logistics.

As Nigeria continues to build one of Africa’s largest youth populations, the U.S. remains a top destination for students seeking world-class education and career-building opportunities.
