Lagos Fashion Week shines as a global hub for creativity

7

Lagos Fashion Week returned with vibrant energy this year, filling the Federal Palace hotel with bold designs, Yoruba drum rhythms, and a spotlight on Nigeria’s rising creative power. The five-day event—now featuring more than 70 designers and drawing over 15,000 attendees—has grown far from its early days of power cuts and small audiences. Founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele, the showcase has launched global talents such as Kenneth Ize, Onalaja, and Lisa Folawiyo, all of whom reinterpret traditional textiles for modern audiences. This year highlighted sustainability as designers transformed recycled materials into striking pieces, a commitment recognized with the prestigious Earthshot Prize. Through community, craft, and innovation, Lagos is redefining what a fashion capital can be.
