Ethiopia has sharply rebuked Egypt as tensions escalate over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, dismissing Cairo’s claims of “historical rights” to the Nile as relics of a colonial past. The dispute intensified after Ethiopia inaugurated the $5 billion GERD in September, prompting Egypt to file protests at the UN and label the dam an existential threat. Cairo also blames Ethiopia for uncoordinated water releases that it says contributed to flooding in Sudan. Ethiopia rejects these allegations, insisting it has full sovereignty over its resources and noting that most of the Nile’s waters originate in its highlands. Addis Ababa maintains that it is committed to fair and equitable use of Nile waters and urged Egypt to abandon what it calls destabilizing tactics.
