ECOWAS engages Guinea-Bissau’s military leaders

4

ECOWAS mediators, led by Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, met with Guinea-Bissau’s transitional leaders to seek a peaceful resolution following last week’s military coup. The discussions, described as “constructive,” focused on restoring constitutional order and resuming the electoral process stalled by the military’s ousting of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. Transitional authorities, including Transitional President Gen. Horta Inta-A and Foreign Minister Joao Bernardo Vieira, agreed to submit a one-year transition proposal to the ECOWAS summit taking place on December 14 in Abuja. Mediators also consulted electoral officials, who stated they could not release presidential results because not all votes had been tallied. The mission’s report will guide West African heads of state in determining Guinea-Bissau’s political roadmap.
